Privacy policy
You can use My Calorie Pal without giving me anything. Your weeks stay in your browser unless you create an account, and nothing you log is ever shared or sold.

Who's responsible
My Calorie Pal is run by Jamie Preece, an independent developer in the UK, who is the data controller for the information below. For anything about your data, use the contact form or email hello@mycalpal.net.
Without an account
Your weeks, saved meals, settings and the meal you're working on are kept in your browser's storage on this device. They're never sent to the server. Clearing your browser's data for this site removes them.
With an account
To sync between your devices, the server stores:
- Your account: name, email address and your password, scrambled so it can't be read back.
- Your weeks: calories in and out for each day you log, and whether you've completed a week.
- Your settings: goal, daily target, usual calories out, weight unit and carry-over choice.
- Your saved meals: names, ingredients and calories.
Calorie logs and goals say something about your health, so they're treated with extra care. They're used only to show you your own weeks, charts and insights, and aren't used for advertising, shared or sold. Your weight is never sent to the server.
I hold your account to provide the tracker you've signed up for, and your calorie logs because you choose to record them there. You can stop at any time by deleting your account.
Messages you send
The contact form emails your name, email address and message to me so I can reply. It isn't stored on the site. Emails are kept only as long as the conversation needs them.
Where it's kept
Account data is stored in the cloud on UK based servers and guarded by best practices. Connections to the site are encrypted.
How long it's kept
Your account and everything in it are kept until you ask for it to be deleted.
Google Analytics
Visits are counted with Google Analytics, so I can see which pages and features get used. It records the pages you visit, roughly where you are, your device and browser, and events such as "a day was logged" or "a tool was used". It never receives your calories, goals, weight or meals. Google sets cookies (named _ga) to recognise a returning browser.
To stop Google Analytics counting this device, turn analytics off here. It's remembered in this browser. Browser extensions that block trackers also work.
Cookies and storage
- Needed for the site to work: a session cookie, a security cookie that protects forms and, with an account, a cookie that keeps you logged in on this device until you log out.
- Browser storage: your weeks, meals, theme and settings, as above. It stays on your device.
- Analytics: Google Analytics cookies, which you can turn off as above.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see a copy of your data, correct it, have it deleted, or take it elsewhere. Most of it you can change yourself on your account page. For anything else, including deleting your account, get in touch and I'll do it within a month.
If you're unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, though I'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it. Anything that affects how your account data is used will be pointed out in the app first.
